US-LAB "Covered Bridges"

A safe badge for autumn weather: US-LAB "Covered Bridges"

After the big and long-term tasks for the USA there is now a fine LAB (Local Area Badge) for “in between”! Surely you know such constructions from your surroundings, films or TV? Well, look forward to some information and nice views with the LAB "Covered Bridges"!

A covered bridge is a timber-truss bridge with a roof and siding which, in most covered bridges, create an almost complete enclosure. The main purpose of the covering is to protect the wooden structural members from the weather. Bridges may also have covers for other reasons, such as keeping the surface clear of snow and ice, protecting pedestrians, and keeping horses from shying away from water. The brief moment of relative privacy while crossing the bridges earned them the nickname “Kissing Bridges”.

Such bridges existed as early as 1272 in Germany and Switzerland, and many were built in rural areas of North America in the 18th and 19th centuries. Hundreds of these covered bridges still stand in the US, with Pennsylvania having more than any other state, over 200. The highest concentration of these bridges is in south-central Pennsylvania, in the area settled by the "Pennsylvania Dutch", immigrants from the German Palatinate in the 17th and 18th centuries. Directly adjacent in Maryland there are also some covered bridges.

SoccerFanatics (US) invested a lot of effort and found 43 covered bridges in Pennsylvania with a lot of information for you to discover. DudleyGrunt (US) added 6 covered bridges in Maryland. Together with FLAGSTACK they proudly present a super-beautiful LAB with a total of 49 great locations. To complete this LAB successfully, you have to visit 44 of these bridges, capture the special icons on the map - and then you get the badge for your effort plus 44,000 extra points!

Are there also beautiful landscapes or special buildings in your area that deserve to make it big with a LAB? Then send your suggestions to lab@flagstack.net and we will create a unique LAB together!

We are happy to receive ideas for individual sights at poi@flagstack.net

It can be an entire country? Then send your idea to cob@flagstack.net and we will contact you!

Greetings from the FHQ from your

FLAGHUNTER, are you afraid in the dark?

FLAGSTACK soon revolves around suspense, horror and Halloween. From 18.October to 10.November it's time for fright! Pumpkins, skulls, bats, ghosts and gravestones create a scary and beautiful scenery on the FLAGSTACK map in an impressive shuddering backdrop. And witches will do their mischief too.

Perfectly matched, the show program will provide a gruesome horror experience with 3 Halloween badges waiting for you!

During the coming weeks you will find a black broom in your inventory. You can deploy this broom from Friday, 18.October 2019 (00:00 am, time zone FHQ/Europe/Berlin). A total of 35 black witches will be deployed on the map within a 1km radius of your current location. These 35 witches are visible for all players and can be capped by all players! You need to capture at least 31 witches to get the "Halloween Badge 2019 - Black Edition". The spook ends on 10.November 2019 at midnight (23:59, time zone FHQ/Europe / Berlin) - all witches that haven't been swept away will fly back home.

You want an insider's tip? Host an event during the above mentioned period and arrange to meet as many FLAGHUNTERS as possible so you can mutually capture your witches! If you manage to be at least 8 event race participants on site at your event, there may still be ghosts and creatures around you that you can hunt! Just try it out - or you'll never know... https://www.flagstack.net/events

You still don't get enough from witch-hunting? Then there’s a really sweet offer for you:

From now on you can find golden brooms* in our webshop https://flagstack.net/shop ! You can deploy these golden brooms from Friday, 18.October 2019 (00:00 am, time zone FHQ/Europe/Berlin). A total of 35 golden witches will be deployed on the map within a 1km radius of your current location. Attention: these golden witches are only visible on the map when you get close to them (about 200m)! Other players can find and capture the hidden golden witches too. You will earn additional 4-10 capture on points - and 6-40 capture points for capturing the golden witches. As an extra reward, the "Halloween Badge 2019 - Golden Edition" offers 35,000 extra points! The spook ends on 10.November 2019 at midnight (23:59, time zone FHQ/Europe / Berlin) - then all the not found golden witches crumble to dust... Have a look under your sofa, if you don't believe it ;-)

So the next days you'll be able to sweep away all kinds of witches from the streets as well as leaves - have a scary time and Happy Halloween!

Your team FLAGSTACK

PS: What else is important? You probably know this one from other special offers, but we would like to mention it briefly... Please make sure you have a good GPS reception before deploying the brooms. Since it is not possible to check whether the street is in a secure area or how good the mobile phone reception is, it can happen in individual cases that these Halloween specials are not available. Therefore, there is no legal right to collect all Halloween specials.

* For this item a combination with any discounts, vouchers and rebates is not possible.Only available for orders in connection with PayPal via the website.

Are you a night watchman?

FLAGHUNTER, are you afraid of the dark?

If so, then quickly break this habit... Because this new challenge at FLAGSTACK turns you into a night watchman!

In the middle ages, night watchmen ensured safety and order at night. The typical equipment was a halberd, a horn and a lantern. Luckily, you don't have to carry that much around. Your mobile phone and FLAGSTACK are enough to prove yourself as a night watchman!

What do you have to do? Capture 100 Night Flags from 01.October 2019 (00:00 am, time zone FHQ / Europe / Berlin) - and the night watchman badge incl. 100,000 extra points qualifies you as a courageous citizen! You have exactly 100 days for this challenge!

In the northern hemisphere the dark season begins, and FLAGSTACK shortens the gloomy hours with this exciting task... Can you make it? Are there enough Night Flags around you? Otherwise get some for a discounted price in the Flag-Shop of your trust https://www.flagstack.net/shop and swap coordinates and flags with other FLAGHUNTERs.

Support each other turning night into day, because 100,000 extra points are worth it! Do you have an idea for a worthwhile night trail? Send us the description and your plan via email at info@flagstack.net, and we'll see what conjuring we can do together.

Speaking of conjuring... Today we published some new POIs: in England, Norway, Germany and the USA there's something new to discover for you - Thanks to Frkstonevik (NO), beardedzombie (GB), DudleyGrunt (US), frf (US), Centaursaurus (GB) and Poparni (DE) for your ideas!

Say hello to the night...

The U.S. Mail and its mysterious arrows

Getting an e-mail, dear FLAGHUNTER, is a matter of course nowadays...

We don't think back to the time when the grandfathers of our grandfathers tried to be in contact with people nationwide.

Let`s look back together to the year 1639, when in America the citizen Richard Fairbanks was commissioned by the government authority in Boston, Massachusetts to deliver and carry letters. From the year 1672 there was a monthly postal connection between New York and Boston. The words "urgent" and "fast" had a completely different meaning than today...

How do you think the letters came from A to B in 1763? Yes exactly, the distances were overcome by horse. So it was no surprise that letters from New York to Buffalo were on their way for 4 days, on about 475 miles well-maintained country roads!

From 1842 the government took over the postal service and since 1847 there are state stamps. Also in 1847, the first contract for mailing mail was signed with a foreign government - with Bremen in Germany! For such routes there were not only riders and coaches but also steamers and railways in service, on so-called post roads.

From 1842 the government took over the postal service and since 1847 there are state stamps. Also in 1847, the first contract for mailing mail was signed with a foreign government - with Bremen in Germany! For such routes there were not only riders and coaches but also steamers and railways in service, on so-called post roads.

What was the next step? How did they manage to travel longer distances in less time? In 1918 the U.S. Air Mail was officially inaugurated with the route Washington - Philadelphia - New York. And all this in times without navigation system, without GPS, without smartphone with compass app. So, what's next? Instead of always handling a map and compass in a small plane, someone had a GREAT idea: giant signs in the landscape by means of 21 meter big concrete arrows and about 15 meter high lighthouses, so that they are well visible for the aviators...

Between 1926 and 1932, hundreds of these signs were created on at that time 34 Contract Air Mail (C.A.M.) routes. Some of them are still well visible today, almost 100 years later. Thanks to today's technology - long live the GPS - and FLAGSTACK you can discover these contemporary witnesses!

As the latest Country Badge (COB) for the USA, FLAGSTACK presents the "Aviation Navigation Arrow" series of badges with levels 1-5! From 29 September 2019 (12:00 noon, time zone FHQ / Europe / Berlin) you will find a total of 1,403 locations of these navigation arrows for aviation with a special icon on the map. The diligent MrAndMrsSmith (DE) identified these locations and sent them to us (via e-mail, not air mail). So you "only" need to collect them step by step and you can discover a piece of the U.S. history ;-) If you discover 10 of these navigation arrows, you already reach the first badge level! Glad you don't have to organize a horse or a plane for that, right?

Maybe these navigation arrows will even help you to push your success in the big "Cross-country through America" badge?!

Team FLAGSTACK hopes you have fun on your expedition through the USA!
